What is included in a Developmental Edit?
A DEVELOPMENTAL EDIT:
- Is BIG PICTURE editing. Editors Canada states that "Structural editing is assessing and shaping material to improve its organization and content."
- Considers content and structure
- AKA Structural Editing. The definition of this type of editing varies immensely from editor to editor. Please read the description of each service carefully before booking.
Both my Developmental Edit and my Manuscript Critique focus on the story, the characters, the content in general.
My Developmental Edit includes everything that my Critique does, such as an editor’s memo, but it also includes a more in-depth assessment at the end of each chapter, as well as margin comments as needed throughout your manuscript, using Track Changes. I also provide you with a timeline sheet, character sheets, and resources that will help you during the next steps in the writing, revising, and publishing process.
Process: While reading your book, I make notes about all the areas mentioned below (as applicable to your manuscript). I’ll also be plotting your timeline and characters on style sheets for you. Once I’m finished, I write you an editorial memo, which is essentially a very in-depth report. The length of this varies from novel to novel. I will tell you where you nailed story structure, and I will suggest revisions and deletions. This could be an example, such as what to cut, what to move, or what to add to make your story or writing better. Developmental Editing can lead to an author making serious revisions if significant parts of their story are not working well. Because of this, it’s essential to choose an editor that you trust, and remember that their job is to give you an honest, critical, professional evaluation of both your content and your writing. We want your book to be the best that it can be. Even best-selling authors have developmental editors. Some editors offer help with re-writing services. I do not currently offer this service. If you’re looking for further aid in the development of your novel, I offer Fiction Therapy Consulting. Please see my Fiction Therapy page for more details. I bill all multi-phase editing options as packages. Please see my Terms & Services page for details.
